Hank Green got “caught” using AI… and I genuinely don’t think he did anything wrong.
The whole controversy started because Hank said “I appreciate the pushback” in a video — a phrase people thought sounded suspiciously like ChatGPT.
That led to Hank explaining that while he doesn’t use AI to write his scripts, he DOES use it to help find research papers that he then reads himself.
And somehow, that turned into a much bigger debate about whether creators should be using AI at all.
I actually understand why people care. If you watch someone specifically for THEIR opinions, perspective, and commentary, you probably don’t want those things outsourced to an LLM.
But using AI as a better research tool or dumping your own messy thoughts into it and asking it to help organize them feels like a completely valid use-case to me.
I also think people need to give creators a little more grace here.
Creators are often working under a ton of pressure to constantly research, write, film, edit, publish, and somehow keep doing it over and over again while also having families, businesses, careers, and lives outside of what you see on camera.
Of course they’re going to look for ways to make that process more optimized and sustainable.
Curious what your take on this is…
